Project Overview
- Major demolition and new construction on an active hospital campus
- Phasing construction in a congested and constructed urban site
- Management of critical shutdowns and systems interruptions
Albany Medical Center has expanded its facilities in downtown Albany with a new, four-story pediatric emergency department—the only pediatric emergency department in northeastern New York and western New England. The bright, family-friendly facility includes a wide range of medical services for children and teenagers, including a triage area, private patient rooms, child-conscious x-ray suite, accessible ambulance bay and negative pressure rooms for suspected contagious disease. The facility also adds additional parking for the growing academic medical center as well as administrative and physicians offices.
An existing medical building was demolished on-site, requiring extensive support of excavation to manage the new building’s foundation on the constrained urban site. Once the new building was completed, an adjacent building was demolished to allow for additional parking. In-depth logistics plans were utilized to ensure that the active hospital’s operations, critical deliveries and emergency ambulance arrivals were unaffected by construction activities. Our team self-performed concrete and wood framing trades.
